1. Meet the Author, Mallory Stock
Hi! I’m Mallory, a 25-year-old based out of San Diego, California. I’ve wanted to be an author my entire life, and grew up writing stories and poems for fun. But I was always told (mainly by my inner voice) that it was an unrealistic career choice. So once I hit high school, I pushed my dream off to the side, and went about going down a more ‘practical’ career route, getting a degree and job in marketing.
2. What Led Me Back To Writing
In March of this year, I went to a meditation retreat (any fellow meditators!?) and had a vision in one of my meditations of a fairy tale book opening up. I wasn't really sure what it meant, but after the retreat I wasn’t interested in any of my old hobbies. All I wanted to do was write, which I hadn't had the urge to do in a long time.
A few days later, I discovered the Novelry, an online writing course that takes you through the entire process of writing a novel. The accountability and community was exactly what I needed. It made the entire process seem less daunting, and I signed up immediately. When I started going through the lessons, I learned that many famous novelists drew inspiration from fairytales. Instantly, I knew that was what my meditation vision had been about.
At that moment, I decided I didn’t care what it took. I was going to write a novel. No matter how much resistance and fear I felt, I would do it. Because I knew in my heart it was what I was supposed to do (I’m sure some of you feel the same!)
3. What Is Writer Stack About
I decided to start Writer Stack because I wanted to document the entire process of writing a novel. I wanted to demystify it and show the honest truth behind what it was like.
So here I am. After 3 months of planning my novel, I’m now moving on to the writing portion of my first draft, which I am aiming to complete in 90 days. I will be sharing the ups and downs I go through along the way, to hopefully help you in the creation of your own stories.
On Writer Stack, you can expect weekly journal-like entries of my writing experiences, as well as any writing tips that have helped me. I will also show the revision process (once I get to that stage), and helpful insights into the publishing industry, such as how to secure a literary agent/editor. Finally, you can expect additional newsletters with book recommendations, author resources, and (hopefully, eventually) sneak peeks into my novels.
And one last thing! For more visual and candid content, I’ll be sharing mini vlogs every day on Tik Tok if you want to see some more behind the scenes!
4. The Writer Stack Community
Writing can be a lonely pursuit. Here on Writer Stack, I’m aiming to create a tight-knit, supportive community of writers who encourage one another along their individual writing journeys. I want every writer to feel seen, to feel like we’re all in it together, facing the same struggles and triumphs.
If you are looking to join an amazing writing community that makes the whole novel process seem less scary, you’re in the right place! Whether you’re an aspiring writer who has never quite put pen to page or a seasoned novelist, this newsletter is for you.
5. What You Can Expect
Right now, I will mainly be focusing on my 90 day novel writing journey. I’ll post weekly journal-like newsletters every Sunday, talking openly about my experiences that week, as well as any writing tips that I learned.
I will also be sharing a round up of author resources about once a month - this could include anything from my favorite writing software to other great author-focused Substacks.
And for my fellow book lovers (which I’m assuming we all are), I will have a monthly newsletter highlighting the books that I’ve recently read, with a short description and rating for each so you can add them to your growing TBR (:
I’m so excited to have you here on this novel writing journey with me - don’t worry, you’re not in the writing game alone anymore! I’m here to help you through it all.
