I would like to read your book now. Simply from the songs and lyrics alone, I have been caught in a net I fear I will never escape. That's a really good idea, having a playlist. I'm going to make one tomorrow. ✨

Hahah yay I'm so glad there are people out there who are excited to read it 🥰 Good luck with your playlist, let me know how it goes!

Cool. I wrote a blog on my website on June 2nd, titled, “If my stories had a soundtrack.”It was a great experience for me. As I write new stories, they always get a song too.

Wait that’s so cool! I’ll definitely have to check it out (:

I've started to assemble a playlist for mine! My MMC is a musician and songwriter so I've been looking at songs that I feel reflect him a lot haha! Or ones that he would sing.

Mallory Stock's avatar

I love that!! A playlist will be especially inspiring for your book and characters

Soooo many of us are doing similar things! Clearly it must be working. I love that you made it as a way to prepare yourself go write and then switch to instrumental. I relate to using it go get inspired. I have quite a few different character POVs and I created a different soundtrack for each one to really help me shift into that characters mind. It really helps!

I love that you have different playlists for different characters - I’m sure that helps keep everything straight when trying to manage multiple POVs. Hope the writing is going well!

It’s so cool to see other people doing the same thing! I have a playlist for my novel that’s both vibes and lyrics. Depends on what I imagine is going on as I write but I should have ordered it. I’m too deep in the playlist to do it now 😂

Mallory Stock's avatar

Totally understandable 😂 And I like that idea of combining both lyrics and vibes!

Tasha's avatar

It can be jarring though depending on what starts when another finishes and the scene I’m writing.

This is so great! I've been creating playlists for my characters and my book in general too. I might write a post inspired by yours and share my list too!

Mallory Stock's avatar

You totally should! Let me know when you do (:

Omg when you mentioned you watched Brielle I was like omgggg 😱 me too!! she’s my fave and I do the same when I’m writing ✍️ my script I would listen to songs 🎧🎵 especially the ones that make my character feel like the main character vibesss ;)

Mallory Stock's avatar

Ahhh no way!! She’s truly the best, her videos are so inspiring 🤗

MoMo🎻's avatar

It rlly is!! I rlly like her vids and watching it when I write ✍️ lol 😂

i never thought of using lyrics as part of my process, as i am a “vibes matter” person, but i’m now going to try and use your tips to help, thank you!

Mallory Stock's avatar

Let me know how it goes!

What??-- no "Tiptoe Thru The Tulips"?? 😅

Mallory Stock's avatar

Unfortunately it doesn’t fit the feel of my book 😂

Hi Mallory, thank you for the post! I'm also a writer, and a notorious sucker for a good lyric, but my book playlist is very much on the vibey side. Many of the songs take me back to moments when I felt particularly inspired (about) writing. I never actually sat down to create it, it came about quite organically. I like your structured approach based on the characters' emotions as well! It might actually be a helpful exercise. Thank you for sharing <3

Mallory Stock's avatar

of course! I’m glad you like it. And I love that you took an organic and natural approach to your own playlist

I love this! I too have a playlist for a series I'm working on. It has both vibey and lyric-focused music on it. I keep revising it to fit the plot better because my books go in so many different moods and directions and sometimes the songs clash when I shuffle (and yet not shuffling would be madness).

Mallory Stock's avatar

I love that it’s all a mishmash! Chaotic, but in a good way 🤗

Making character and/or book Playlists can be so fun! I have a long drive tomorrow, I'm excited to get a vibe for your story by listening 🥰

Mallory Stock's avatar

Oh my gosh I’m so honored! I hope you like it and safe travels (:

Kali's avatar

I love the vibe you've laid out!! I can't wait to read it some day <3 It sounds like a great summer read :3

Mallory Stock's avatar

Aww thank you for listening! It means a lot <3

This is a very interesting concept. I have long puzzled the idea of merging the written word with audio stimulus. Not just lines and music, but various sound effects, and dramatic emphasis would enhance the story. But, how to do it without a full audio production like in a movie? Expensive. Audio books stop short of what I envision. I experimented with my poetry in Where the Wild Rice Grows, and it turned out good. But I'm still looking for a working solution. A print book that makes sounds? Future technology maybe.

Mallory Stock's avatar

That would be so cool! Have you heard of graphic audiobooks before? They include voice actors, sound effects, and background music (basically a movie without the visuals) but I’m sure those are expensive to make. I definitely think there’s a lot of room for growth in combining sounds and books - excited to see what you do!

That is a really cool idea!

Mallory Stock's avatar

Thanks April! It was a lot of fun (:

This is such a great idea, it can really set the mood for the story and also to help you ease into it as you develop it. Totally stealing this!

Mallory Stock's avatar

Yay please do!! Let me know how it goes (:

Great idea - thanks! I just created one for my novel. It’s very eclectic.

Ahh that makes me so happy! Love an eclectic playlist
